I\'ve tested the Lz1 compression in a test environment here\'s the results :
First of all i\'ve created two files:

file a : word document with a lot of images inside
file b : word document with only text

size : file a 12.371.456 byte - file b 5.763.584 byte
size on disk : file a 12.378.112 byte - file b 5.767.168 byte

File b:2.240.138 byte

after every test i\'ve rebooted the server and i\'ve done the tests more than one
time .
In the mail.box of the server the lz1compression ( if we want to talk about
the compression in the mail file ) is already enabled by default , if you
remove the flag in the mail.box it will be reenabled on the next server
restart.
Lz1 not enabled on the mail.box but only in the client with file b :2.240.138

Lz1 enabled both on the mail.box and on the client with file b:150.012 byte
Conclusion :
first of all is not a matter of server ports ( sorry i\'ve realized it now !!!
)so perhaps nothing can be implemented with policy given the fact that lz1
cannot be enabled with policy in 6.5.3 , to let the compression work we can
only work with scripts ( not me !!!! ) , maybe this can be useful ..

we have to consider then that every new db that we add in our network should
have lz1 enabled after the creation ...
Second , lz1 compression is not useful in some case ( i\'ve found that the size
is growin, check the file a: ... , is not workin with image file ... ) , so we
need to check before all WHAT we want/need to compress ( text , pdf , image
??????? ). otherwise it\'s better to leave the things as it is .
another thing , to check the real file size it\'s better to go in the document
properties ...
I don\'t know which kind of tests has been done in XXXXXXX ( surely something
better and more powerful than my thinkpad t23 ) but at the moment i think it\'s
better if we want to implement lz1 to test it carefully ( maybe we can start
to use in our mail file ) and discuss what we needed to compress ...
